We have been fortunate enough to work closely with The Dent Family from Coverdale for over a decade collecting Yorkshire’s Finest game throughout the season and all kicking off on what is usually regarded as The Glorious Twelfth. With climate change there are many alterations and this includes fluctuating and declining wildlife populations also.
Andrew kindly shared his expert knowledge with us on the season so that we can pass this on to you also. ‘The Grouse Shooting Season of 2024 can only be described by the majority of moorland keepers and moor owners as a disaster. A hard winter with frost and snow aids the survival of grouse as it helps to control the worm counts of the game birds, Unfortunately this didn’t materialise and with the mild weather the grouse moorlands lost 90% of their breeding stocks between October and March. There were very few moors that were unaffected by this crash’.
He added, ‘On 12th August there was not a single grouse in our premises which has never happened before, ever. It’s been so difficult to keep our loyal customers happy and disappointing for so many. This include grouse moor keepers, the local economy and hospitality to even include children who enjoy their few days beating each season. This however is the unpredictability of grouse shooting.
‘My father once said, If there was a man alive who made a living understanding women and grouse, he’d be a wealthy man’.
We thank Andrew and his family for the incredible offering that they deliver to our doors throughout the season and it is a pleasure to work closely with another reputable family business. Grouse will continue to be available for as long as viable To the Chefs but we will sadly not be able to extend the offer To the Cooks for this year.
