Waterford Farm

History and Heritage

R&J Yorkshire’s Finest is a butcher with deep roots to the land and an abundance of farming heritage. We have our own farm in Nidderdale called Waterford Farm, and this is where our prized Signature Waterford Farm livestock comes from.

R&J was established in 1978 by Robert and Jo Atkinson, both from farming families. Inspired to build on the firm foundations provided by their successful cattle farming business they began supplying meat directly to friends, neighbours and local families. Word gradually spread and before long restaurants and country pubs from miles around were placing orders. Some of those early customers are still on the books today.

Its humble beginnings in a converted barn are now long behind it. R&J moved to a purpose-built EU-approved cutting plant on the edge of our farm. Waterford Farm has however stayed very much the same, providing lush grass pastures for our animals to graze on. We have various cattle on our farm; ranging from Native breeds to continental breeds. We are currently farming, Belted Galloways, English Longhorn, Black Angus, Charolais and Limousin cattle. We also have a flock of Scottish Black Face Cull Yow on the farm.

We also have a fantastic informal co-op of farmers supplying us with Woodland Pork, Yorkshire Lambs, Free Range Poultry and other Native breed cattle.

Rob and Jo’s eldest son Ryan, who now manages the business, is the fifth generation of the family to be involved in farming. Rob and Jo are still involved and their unrivalled livestock knowledge and passion has led to the success of the business.

R&J continues to grow due to the unswerving focus on quality. Not only do we supply meats to some of the country’s best chefs and restaurants but R&J Yorkshire’s Finest is now also available to the public.
